The seniors were winners on Senior Day as the Eagles won many close matches for a 7-0 victory over a strong Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran squad in a result that was much closer than the final score suggests.
In the varsity match, the teams played 15 sets and nine of those were 6-4, 7-5 or 7-6. Delta won eight of those nine close sets.
Senior Iva Witter had the tightest match of the evening at No. 3 singles. She won 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a match that featured many long rallies. It was Iva’s 15th win of the season against just four losses.
Senior Janet Wegener teamed with freshman Katie Manor to win 6-2, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 doubles. They are 18-2 this season.
Seniors Rylen Jones and Emily Hayes filled the No. 3 doubles role at varsity in a format of four singles and three doubles matches. Jones has negotiated a knee injury all season, and she and Hayes hung tough for a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Jones’ big forehand strokes and Hayes’ quick reactions at the net proved to be a good combination.
The team’s fifth senior, Autumn Subler, won her JV singles match 6-4. She trailed 0-3 before storming back for the win.
The final senior, Emily Woodson, was also honored before the match but is unable to play due to an ankle injury.
One major highlight on Tuesday was the performance of junior Gabby Knight at No. 1 singles. She won 6-2, 6-1 and now stands 13-7 at the top position.
Sophomore Brylee Beckley won 7-5, 6-4 over a solid opponent at No. 2 singles. Freshman Elizabeth Bamidele rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Kelsey Vest and freshman Rowan Hinds were 6-4, 7-6 (8) victors at No. 2 doubles, where they now are 17-2.
Delta won the JV match 8-1.
Ranked 20th, the Eagles (15-2) will next face 14th-rated Center Grove at 5 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Vernon courts.
