Greenfield-Central snapped Delta’s 6-year, 35-match conference winning streak by edging the Eagles 3-2 on Tuesday evening.

The Hoosier Heritage Conference match was the home opener for Delta.  The Eagles had never previously lost to Greenfield in boys’ tennis, but the Cougars are enjoying a strong season and lead the league standings at this point.  Greenfield moves to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the HHC. Delta is 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Delta swept doubles as Dalton Royal / Riley Bratton and Isaac Anderson / Preston Shanayda won handily. But Greenfield swept singles, including a 2.5-hour, three-set decision at No. 3 singles in the final match on the court.

Delta win the JV match 8-3. Highlights included an 8-2 victory for Caleb Hewitt at No. 1 singles.  Caleb has won four matches in a row.  Owen Cupp improved to 6-2 on the season with a 5-3 victory when his opponent had to retire with a hand injury.   Kaden Crist teamed with Hanson Heintzelman to win 6-4 in doubles, improving Kaden’s record to 4-1 and Hanson’s record to 2-0.  Ben Miller/Jake Bilby, Aaron Elliott/Brady Williams, John Atkinson/Kam Swoboda, Will Kile/James Root, Alex Smith/Jacob Williams, and Matteo Caddedu/James Engle all won doubles matches.

The Eagles will compete against 14th-ranked Cathedral at 9 a.m. Saturday in the opening round of the Fort Wayne Carroll Invitational.  This will be Delta’s fifth match against a Top 20 opponent in its first eight matches this fall.
