The quest for another sectional championship got off to a good start Thursday evening as Delta smothered Muncie Burris, 5-0, in a sectional semifinal match on the Eagle courts.
The Eagles gave up only two total games to the Owls.
In the other semifinal match, Yorktown dominated Muncie Central, 5-0, and gave up just eight games.
Delta and Yorktown will meet in the finals at 11 a.m. Saturday. Delta will try for its 31st consecutive sectional championship. The Eagles beat the Tigers 4-1 a little over two weeks ago, although the Tigers played that match without two of their top players. Those players now are back in the lineup.
Against Burris, senior Simon Marlow led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Junior Kody Vest dropped just one game at No. 2 singles, and senior Jake Bilby was a 6-0, 6-0 victor at No. 3 singles.
Seniors Dalton Royal and Preston Shanayda claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles to move to 20-3 for the season,. Royal gained his 65th career varsity victory to move into 18th place all-time in DHS boys’ tennis history. His latest victory moved him past a quartet of DHS Tennis stars who had 64 career wins: J.D. Greenlee, Kaus Christopher, Matt McKinney and Billy Ruxton.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Aaron Elliott and freshman Tyce Dishman blanked their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.
