On Teacher Appreciation Day, the Eagles received an A+.
First, the Eagles honored about 30 special educators, with each student presenting a customized gift to their honored guest. The team also heard inspirational words from former DHS Tennis star and class valedictorian Kristin Crider, now a Muncie dentist.
In the match, 22nd-ranked Delta (5-2) won 6-1 at the varsity level and 8-6 at the JV level over Alexandria. All players got to play.
Leading the way with 6-0, 6-0 victories were Gabby Knight at No. 1 singles and Kelsey Vest/Rowan Hinds at No. 2 doubles. Iva Witter dropped just one game at No. 3 singles, and Rylen Jones/Caitlyn Kirby also gave up only one game at No. 3 doubles. Elizabeth Bamidele won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Janet Wegener and Katie Manor were 6-1, 6-4 victors at No. 1 doubles,
Alexandria’s Gabby Hosier outlasted Brylee Beckley 7-6 (3), 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
In JV action, winners were Olivia Marshall and Maddy Cooper in singles as well as the doubles teams of Emily Hayes/Stella Sieber, Grace Flowers/Carmen Maxwell, Marley Dowling/Anna Marcum, Audrey Anderson/Ella Marcum, Tru Swoboda/Sam Diaz and Madison Sanchez/Jocelyn Moody.
The Eagles will travel in opposite directions this weekend. Varsity plays at the Plymouth Invitational with state-ranked Noblesville and state-ranked Bloomington North on Saturday. JV travels north to the Plymouth Invitational.
