Also in 1993, the Delta Eagles boys’ tennis team won the sectional title, starting a streak that now has reached 27 straight years.
The 27th consecutive title came Saturday morning in a 4-1 home-court victory over Muncie Burris.
The 23rd-ranked Eagles improved to 18-3, reaching the 18-win mark for the 10th straight season. Delta advances to the Marion Regional where the Eagles will face Winchester at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Marion and Lapel will meet in the other semifinal, with the winners to return Wednesday for the regional championship.
The only tight match in the sectional finals came at No. 1 singles, where Delta junior Tanner Southerland and Burris freshman Charlie Behrman played a three-set match for the second time in a week. This time Behrman prevailed, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 to avenge his loss a week ago to Southerland. Behrman, 17-2 this season with his only other loss coming to Park Tudor, will advance as an individual in the singles tournament.
Delta junior Brandon Jackson moved to 21-3 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mason Waldron.
Senior Daniel Vencel improved to 17-6 with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 result.
Seniors Mason Knight and Cade Brown won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and are also 17-6.
Senior Jaigen Glaze and sophomore Walker Boyle won 6-0, 6-0. Glaze is 17-3 and Boyle is 16-3.
