Win 3 - 0

After a short delay for the courts to dry from morning rain, 20th-ranked Delta defeated Indianapolis Bishop Chatard 3-2 in the opening round of the Delta Invitational.

The Eagles then gained a 3-2 victory over 26th-ranked Fort Wayne Carroll in round two.

Finally, the Eagles shut out Covington 5-0 to secure the tournament championship.

Then, late in the afternoon, five of Delta’s varsity players headed to the prom for a night of fun.

The Eagles continued to dominate doubles as they have done most of the year.  Senior Janet Wegener and freshman Katie Manor went 3-0 on the day at No. 1 doubles, winning 36 games and losing 9.  They are now 14-2 this spring.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Kelsey Vest and freshman Rowan Hinds were even more dominant, going 3-0 and winning 36 games while dropping only 5 games.  Kelsey is 13-2 and Rowan is 12-2 this season.

No. 3 singles player Iva Witter had a big day, also. She went 3-0 and is now 11-4 for the season.  She dropped the first set to Chatard 4-6 and trailed 1-4 in the second set. But just when things were looking bleak, she went on an incredible run.  For the rest of the day, she won 29 out of 30 games and also won the third-set tiebreak to clinch the victory over Chatard.

At No. 1 singles, junior Gabby Knight faced some strong players and went 1-2 on the day. She finished the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Covington and now stands 10-6 in her first season at No. 1 singles.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Brylee Beckley started fast with a 6-1 victory first-set victory over Chatard, but she was unable to seal the match and fell 6-1, 6-7 (4), (2-10).  She also lost to Carroll in round two.

Freshman Elizabeth Bamidele got a varsity match in round three and won 6-1, 6-1 over Covington.  Bamidele also was 2-0 in JV sets on the day.  Freshmen Stella Sieber and Olivia Marshall went 1-2 in JV sets, also.

The tournament sportsmanship award went to Delta senior Janet Wegener.
