VS

Mt. Vernon (SENIOR DAY)

September 27th, 2021 at 4:45 p.m.

Win 4 - 1

Despite returning only two full-time varsity players from last year, the Eagles completed another Hoosier Heritage Conference championship on Monday night.

Playing a lineup of only seniors on Senior Night, Delta defeated Mt. Vernon 4-1 to finish a perfect 7-0 in HHC matches.

The Eagles beat three conference teams by 5-0 scores: Yorktown, Shelbyville and Pendleton Heights.  They beat four conference opponents by 4-1 scores: New Palestine, Greenfield-Central, New Castle and Mt. Vernon.

The title represents the 22nd championship in Delta’s 26 years as a member of the HHC.  The Eagles have won 11 of the last 12 conference titles.

The latest championship is especially satisfying because the conference was as deep from top to bottom as it has been in recent memory.  New Pal is 16-3; Greenfield is 15-5; and New Castle is 16-5.  Mt. Vernon had 10 wins and recently beat New Castle.

Senior Adam Altobella led the way at No. 1 singles against Mt. Vernon.  He won 6-1, 6-4 for his 12th win of the season after moving up from playing No. 3 singles a year ago.

Senior Eli Arnold improved to 4-0 in three-set matches this season.  Normally the Eagles’ No. 3 singles player, he moved up to No. 2 singles and won 6-0, 6-7 (10), 6-2 in the night’s longest match. Eli is 16-5 in his first season as a varsity player.

Senior Aidan Landis played No. 3 singles for the first time in his careere.  He won the first set 6-3, dropped the second set 5-7, and was barely under way in the third set when he had to retire due to cramps.

Senior Brad Shue earned his first-ever varsity match after playing 63 JV matches over the past four years.  He teamed with standout doubles player Walker Boyle, also a senior, and they won 6-2, 6-2 with aggressive net play.  Boyle raised his record to 19-2 this fall and now stands 56-7 at the varsity level in his career.

At No. 2 doubles, seniors Mason Wrisley and Landon Freiburger handled the challenge of playing two left-handers and won 6-1, 6-2.  It is their 10th victory of the season.

Four other seniors won JV matches against Mt. Vernon.  Ross Meacham and Logan Anderson won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Cooper Roach and Javin Kile won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.

The JV team won 9-3 to finish 15-1 for the season.

The varsity (14-5 overall) will host Yorktown in the opening round of the Delta Sectional at 4:45 p.m. Thursday.

The Eagles will be in pursuit of their 29th consecutive sectional title in boys’ tennis.
