It was time for seniors to shine on Monday evening as the Eagles swept Pendleton Heights by a 7-0 score on Senior Night.
All six seniors won their matches, including four seniors who played varsity for the first time this season.
The highlight came in varsity singles, where senior Hannah Swanson battled for 2.5 hours and gutted out a 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-2 victory in her first-ever varsity match. Hannah, who had a career record of 4-10 in JV matches prior to this season, is having an amazing senior year as she is now 10-0 this spring.
Two other seniors, Grace Flowers and Sam Diaz, played varsity doubles for the first time and won 6-3, 6-3. Both began playing tennis as sophomores, and that season Sam won just one JV match and Grace won four JV matches. This year, Grace remains unbeaten at 9-0 and Sam owns a 9-1 record.
A fourth senior, Caitlyn Kirby, also played varsity singles and won 6-3, 6-4. She has 41 career JV wins and is now 2-0 varsity for her career.
The team’s top senior, No. 1 singles player Gabby Knight, continued her outstanding season. She won 6-0, 6-1 to improve to 13-4 this spring. Gabby now has 61 career varsity victories, all in singles.
The Eagles’ final senior, Caitie Wright, just began playing tennis this year. She had not yet won a match, but yesterday she teamed with sophomore Blaysha Downing to win 8-3 in a JV match.
All six seniors plan to go to college:
Gabby = Purdue University for animal science/veterinary school
Caitlyn = Ball State University for nursing
Grace = Purdue University for political science / pre-law
Hannah = Ball State University for landscape architecture
Sam = Ball State University for journalism / Spanish
Caitie = Vincennes University for accounting
At one point this season the Eagles were 2-2 after losing to 13th-ranked Mt. Vernon, which snapped an 80-match winning streak in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. In the 20 days since that happened, the 20th-ranked Eagles have won 10 straight matches and have gone 22-0 in individual matches against conference opponents.
Also winning varsity matches yesterday were junior Brylee Beckley in singles and the doubles teams of Katie Manor/Kelsey Vest and Rowan Hinds/Alexa Bratton.
The JV team won 9-2 to improve its record to 9-3 this spring.
