The Eagles showed some grit in a long road trip on a hot Monday evening to New Palestine, but in the end the 26th-ranked Dragons gained a 4-1 victory over the Eagles in the Hoosier Heritage Conference opener.

Senior Owen Cupp collected the biggest victory of his career with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) win at No. 2 singles over New Pal senior Brady Torzewski.  It was just the second time in two years that the extremely consistent Torzewski has lost.

The other two varsity singles matches also were long grueling battles in the 90-degree heat, with New Pal winning both by identical 6-4, 6-4 scores.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Kam Swoboda and junior Ben Miller took the opening set 7-6 over a pair of New Pal seniors, but the Dragons regrouped and won the last two sets 6-2, 6-2.

New Pal cruised at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-1.

In the JV match, Delta earned a 10-7 victory.  Colten Cruea won 8-3 at the top singles position, and Ayden Mitchell rallied from a 2-5 hole to win 8-5 at the second singles spot.  In doubles, winners were John Atkinson/James Root, Graham Sieber/Alexander Smith, Denys Krushenytskyi/Jason Ogle, James Root/Roman Ashcraft, Jacob Williams/Daniel Tokar, Maddox Weddle/Jason Ogle, Grant Durkovich/Rylan Oliver, and Reid Cardemon/Jensen Moody.

Delta (0-1) will face Shelbyville in an HHC match at 10 a.m. Saturday before traveling north to Culver Military Academy for a 3 p.m. match the same day.
