Delta’s girls’ tennis team put together one of the best matches of its season on Friday evening as the Eagles rolled to a 5-0 shutout victory over Yorktown in the finals of the Delta Sectional.
The 12th-ranked Eagles (15-3) won the sectional for the 26th time in the past 27 years. They will advance to the Marion Regional where they will face Mississinewa at 5 p.m. Tuesday. (Mississinewa upended Marion in sectional play.)
Since Spring 1992, when George H.W. Bush was president, the Eagles have won every sectional title except one (2010). This streak has spanned the presidencies of Bush, Bill Clinton (two terms), George W. Bush (two terms), Barack Obama (two terms), and Donald Trump.
Delta also has won six of the last seven Marion Regional titles, including the last three.
The sectional championship match turned into a family affair between the Sniders of Delta and the Academias of Yorktown. The sisters faced off at the top singles positions in a couple of hard-hitting, competitive battles.
At No. 1 singles, junior Ellie Snider knocked off sophomore Sam Academia, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, senior Emma Snider edged freshman Sasha Academia, 7-6 (7), 7-5.
The rest of the match was more lopsided. Freshman Tynan Dishman won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Seniors Grace Belangee and Lexie Manor won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. And senior Kortney Helm and freshman Maggie Manor won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Ellie Snider is now 15-6 for the season, followed by Emma Snider at 18-3, and Tynan Dishman at 17-4.
Both Delta doubles teams are 18-3. Belangee and Lexie Manor have played all the matches at No. 1 doubles, while Helm, Maggie Manor and Mayzie Hinkle have rotated at No. 2 doubles.
