Albany Elementary School student Christian Daugherty and his family came out to the boys’ tennis scrimmage on Saturday morning, Aug. 11., to receive a check for $1,200 from the SmashCancer event last spring.
Christian was joined by his parents, Brad and Amanda, as well as siblings Madyson, Grace and Eli. The money will help the family have some fun as their long battle with Christian’s brain cancer continues.
The 7th annual SmashCancer match last May generated more than $7,000 in proceeds for local cancer organizations. The Cancer Center at IU Health Ball Hospital, the Little Red Door Cancer Services of East Central Indiana, and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life program already have received checks earlier in the summer from the event. An additional check will be forthcoming to a childhood cancer charity in honor of Delta HS student Amanda Kirby, a survivor of brain cancer.
In seven years of SmashCancer matches between Delta and Yorktown girls’ tennis teams, more than $33,000 has been raised for local organizations and families.
