Rumors of free ice cream at the fire station across the street from the Lapel HS tennis courts proved to be false, but that was about the only disappointment for the Delta boys’ tennis team Wednesday evening.

On another near 90-degree day, the Eagles torched Lapel 5-0 at the varsity level and 11-2 in the JV match.

No. 2 singles player sophomore Charlie Vannatter led the way.  His opponent, freshman Eli Barnett, entered with a 14-0 record.  Vannatter rolled through the match, winning 6-0, 6-0.in less time than it would take for an ice-cream cone to melt.

Junior Kaleb Barnett, Eli’s older brother, also took a 14-0 record into his No. 1 singles match against sophomore Jackson Darby.  After a quick 6-1 victory for Darby in the opening set, the players locked into a hard-hitting battle in the second set.  Darby prevailed to earn a 6-1, 7-5 victory in a matchup of two of District 4’s top singles players.

Junior Luke Atkinson completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Senior Tyce Dishman and sophomore Brandon Grubbs cruised 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.  Junior Roman Ashcraft and freshman Easton Duckworth dropped just one game at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-1.

Delta, ranked 7th in the state, improved its record to 7-2. Over the next six days, the Eagles will play three more state-ranked teams: #14 West Lafayette, #16 Fort Wayne Carroll, and #18 Kokomo.

The JV Eagles are now 5-1 after the dominating victory over Lapel.  The JV team will face Yorktown tonight (Thursday) at 5:30 p.m. at the Delta courts.
