Lapel

Wednesday, September 10th at 5:00 p.m.

Win 5 - 0

Visiting Lapel put some early heat on Delta at all three varsity singles positions, but the young Eagles kept their composure and rallied back for a 5-0 sweep on Wednesday evening.

Lapel led 5-2 at No. 1 singles, 4-1 at No. 2 singles, and 6-1 at No. 3 singles.  That means in those three singles positions the Bulldogs won 15 of the first 19 games, activating the “upset alert” button!

But at No. 1 singles, freshman Jackson Darby won five straight games to take the first set 7-5 en route to a 7-5, 6-4 victory.  Lapel sophomore Kaleb Barnett entered the match with just one loss this season.

At No. 2 singles, freshman Charlie Vannatter dug out of his early hole by rattling off 11 straight games to beat senior Hogan Bair, 6-4, 6-0.

And at No. 3 singles, sophomore Luke Atkinson regrouped after the first-set loss to beat senior Quinn Wilkins, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Meanwhile, the Delta doubles teams rolled to big victories.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Aaron Elliott and junior Tyce Dishman won 6-2, 6-2 over seniors Cam Novak and Tyler Cash.   The result was the 40th career varsity victory for Elliott, who leads the team in that category.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Brady Williams and freshman Brandon Grubbs gained a 6-1, 6-3 victory over senior Aaron Gooding and junior Boston Brown.

The 13th-ranked varsity Eagles raised their season record to 7-2.

The JV flexed its muscles for the second straight match.  Everyone played against Lapel as the team punched its way to a 16-0 victory.  The previous night against New Castle the JV won 8-0.  So in the two-day stretch against New Castle and Lapel, the varsity players won all 10 of their matches and the JV players won all 24 of their matches. Making those numbers even more impressive is the fact that the Lapel and New Castle programs have a 20-5 varsity record against all other opponents this fall and both are district ranked teams.

Individually, the Eagles have four JV players who remain unbeaten for the season.  They are Grant Durkovich (7-0), Jacob Tokar (7-0), Jacob Williams (6-0) and John Atkinson (4-0).  Three JV players have 10 wins this season: Colten Cruea, Bryce Carmichael and Kiptyn Schwartz.

The team will remain busy over the next few days.

The Eagles will play in a JV only match at Yorktown tonight (Thursday) at 5:15 p.m. Spectators are reminded to bring their own chairs as bleacher seating is limited at the Tiger courts.  Parking also is limited; overflow parking is at Pleasant View Elementary across the street from the courts.

On Saturday, the varsity will compete in the Kokomo Invitational.  The Eagles will play Peru at 9 a.m., then face 27th-ranked Kokomo at 11:30 a.m. and finish the day against West Lafayette at 2 p.m.

Also on Saturday, the top JV will play in a new event, the Noblesville JV Invitational.  This is a flighted tournament that starts at 10 a.m. and includes Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield, Avon, Guerin Catholic, Floyd Central and Noblesville.  All teams are state-ranked except Noblesville.

The rest of the JV will be at the Kokomo JV Invitational, which is being played at Western High School in Russiaville.  This event starts at 9 a.m. and features flighted competition among players from Delta, Western, Kokomo, West Lafayette and Peru.
