Twenty proved to be the magic number on Wednesday evening as the Eagles beat Marion 3-2 to win the Marion Regional championship.
> Delta gained its 20th victory of the season.
> No. 3 singles player Maggie Hunt notched her 20th win.
> No. 2 doubles players Sara Cardemon and Janet Wegener collected their 20th win.
It was the Eagles’ school-record sixth straight regional championship in girls’ tennis and ninth title in the past 10 years.
As a result, Delta (20-3) will play in Saturday’s Homestead Semi-State in Fort Wayne. The 12th-ranked Eagles will play at 10 a.m. against either #9 Fishers or #14 Cathedral. Those teams meet Thursday night for the North Central Regional title.
The key match for Delta in the regional final was No. 3 singles, where Hunt faced Marion’s Graciela Solis. Solis entered with a 20-2 record, but Hunt won 6-2, 6-2 for her second victory of the season over Solis. Hunt is now 20-5 this spring.
Cardemon and Wegener won 6-3, 6-0 to improve to 20-3 at No. 2 doubles.
The quickest match came at No. 1 singles, where Maggie Manor and Tynan Dishman needed only 35 minutes for a 6-0, 6-0 win. They are 23-2 this spring.
Marion claimed the top two singles positions in long battles. Three of the four sets went to 5-7, but the Eagles lost them all.
