The Eagles withstood a couple of early challenges and gained a 5-0 shutout victory over Muncie Burris on a chilly Wednesday evening at Ball State’s varsity courts.

The biggest surprise came at No. 1 doubles, where Burris juniors Grace Murray and Joey Burton jumped to a 4-1 lead and later had two set points in the first set against junior Kelsey Vest and sophomore Katie Manor.  But the Eagle duo remained calm and stayed positive and won the first set 7-5, then cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set.  Vest and Manor improved to 9-1 for the team’s best varsity record.

Senior Gabby Knight raised her record to 7-3 ay No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Junior Brylee Beckley also moved to 7-3 by winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Elizabeth Bamidele upped her record to 6-4 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles.

And sophomore Rowan Hinds  and freshmen Alexa Bratton won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and now have a 7-3 record this spring.

The 21st-ranked varsity Eagles are 5-2 in dual matches. The team travels to New Palestine on Thursday evening for a league match.

In JV action, the Eagles posted a 10-6 victory and now stand 6-2 on the season.

A fun highlight of the JV match came during the final match of the evening.  Sophomore Noelle Longsworth and freshman Ilicia Ritter rallied from several deficits and fought off four match points en route to a 7-6 (8-6) victory with the entire crowd watching.

Other winners for the JV were Olivia Marshall, Tru Swoboda, Addy Anderson and Jocelyn Moody in singles as well as the doubles teams of Caitlyn Kirby/Anna Marcum, Grace Flowers/Marley Dowling, Audrey Anderson/Ella Marcum, Sam Diaz/Mylee Jones and Hannah Swanson/Mackemzie Lipps.
