Hoosier Heritage Conference rivals Delta and Mt. Vernon each entered Wednesday evening’s girls’ tennis match with unbeaten records. At the end of the night, however, the Eagles clearly soared to the top.

Delta shut out Mt. Vernon 5-0 in the varsity match and prevailed 10-6 in the JV match at the Fortville courts.

Senior Ellie Snider continued her hot play for the Eagles. She faced a challenge from hard-hitting MV sophomore Lydia Ruegsegger, but Snider rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory and was first off the court.

Mayzie Hinkle and Maggie Manor remained unbeaten in doubles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Tynan Dishman and Abby Bamidele also stayed unbeaten in doubles. After a tight first set, they pulled away for a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory.

Gwendolyn Clark gained a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Maggie Hunt stayed undefeated with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.

The JV team won all the top singles and doubles positions before losing several playbacks.

Doubles = Ryley Bilbrey/Sara Cardemon, Mary Groover/Maddy Robbins, Carly Ratliff/Madalin Davis, Olivia Miller/Bailey Brown, Jacy Bradley/Laura Fowler, Jess Snodgrass/Katie Alexander.

Delta’s varsity will host Alexandria at 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday). The match is Teacher Appreciation Day, with a 4 p.m. ceremony honoring teachers and celebrating our players’ academic successes.

The Eagles then will travel to the Crawfordsville Invitational on Saturday for the varsity. The JV goes a different direction to the Plymouth Invitational.
