Bolstered by a 6-0, 6-0 victory from senior Owen Vest at No. 2 singles, the Eagles topped a strong New Castle team 3-2 on Tuesday evening and returned to a first-place tie in the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings.
Mt. Vernon defeated Greenfield-Central 4-1 on Tuesday evening, also. This means that Delta, Greenfield, Mt. Vernon, Yorktown and Shelbyville all have only one loss in league play. New Castle has dropped two HHC matches.
Against New Castle, the Eagles won at No. 2 singles and in both doubles positions.
Owen Vest has won three straight matches at No. 2 by a combined score of 36-4 in games. His opponent on Tuesday was New Castle senior Sam Underhill, an experienced player. Owen took charge of the match early and never looked back.
In doubles, Riley Bratton and Colin McCrady won 6-0, 6-1 and showed excellent focus and shot selection throughout the match. Preston Shanayda and Isaac Anderson overcame a slow start to win 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Dalton Royal battled closely with New Castle career victories leader Trent Alfrey, who has not lost a league match in two years at No. 1 singles. In the end, Alfrey pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
At No. 3 singles, Kody Vest rolled in the first set 6-1, but then dropped the final two sets, each 3-6.
Delta won the JV match 7-0, highlighted by Simon Marlow’s 8-0 victory at No. 1 singles.
