Team with toilet paper

The Eagles celebrate Tuesday night after claiming the Golden Plunger award as the winners of the Toilet Paper Challenge. Delta families brought 1,140 rolls of toilet paper for the Community Basket, a non-food bank associated with The Jar church. Yorktown contributed 600 rolls for a new record total of 1,740 rolls for needy families in our area.

It was a clean sweep of Yorktown on Tuesday evening as the Eagles won all 19 matches on the home courts and also retained the “Golden Plunger” by winning the Toilet Paper Challenge charity competition.

The varsity score was 5-0 for Delta as the Eagles gave up only 11 games on the five courts.

The JV score was 14-0 for the Eagles although six of the matches were 8-4 or closer.

And in the charity challenge, Delta families brought 1,140 rolls of toilet paper while Yorktown families donated 600 rolls for a new record total of 1,740 rolls.  All of the toilet paper will go to the Community Basket, a non-food bank operated by The Jar church of Muncie for needy families in Delaware County.

Kody and Tyce with plunger

Kody Vest and Tyce Dishman proudly show off the Golden Plunger!

Delta raised its record to 9-4 overall with its sixth straight victory.  The Eagles are 4-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference and remain in the race for the league title.

This was the Eagles’ 59th consecutive dual-match victory over Yorktown in boys’ tennis, a streak that extends more than 30 years!

Senior Kody Vest was first off the court Tuesday evening with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Silas Carder.

The No. 1 doubles team of Brady Williams and Ben Miller was next off the courts by winning 6-2, 6-0 over Camden Gilliam and Seth Cooper.

Ben and Brady signs

No. 1 doubles players Ben Miller (left) and Brady Williams (right) align perfectly with their tennis ball name signs at the DHS courts. The signs of all team members are in alphabetical order by grade, and it is extraordinarily rare for an action photo like this to occur.

Picking up the Eagles’ third point was senior Owen Cupp, who beat Reid Butts 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Freshmen Luke Atkinson then added a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Noah Kelly at No. 3 singles.

Finishing the varsity sweep was the No. 2 doubles team of Tyce Dishman and Aaron Elliott, who won 6-3, 6-1 over Yorktown’s Tyler Koss and Connor Tinch.

Winning 8-0 at the JV level were Kam Swoboda/Kaden Crist and Maddox Weddle/Kiptyn Berry.  Bryce Carmichael won twice, first with Ayden Mitchell and then with Hunter Reed. Graham Sieber and Rylan Oliver rallied from a 3-7 hole to win 8-7 (10), and Reid Cardemon and Grant Durkovich also won a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7).

Next match for the Eagles will be tonight (Wednesday) against 19th-ranked Fort Wayne Carroll.  The match will be 5:15 p.m. at a neutral site, the Norwell HS courts.
