One of the craziest streaks in east-central Indiana sports history gained another notch on Tuesday evening as the visiting Delta boys’ tennis team beat rival Yorktown for the 60th consecutive time.

This streak spans 32 years, dating all the way back to when Bill Clinton was president, Charles Barkley was the NBA MVP, Bobby Knight was the IU basketball coach, and Tate Dishman was in diapers.

The Eagles beat the Tigers 5-0 on the Yorktown courts.  Delta gave up only four games total in the five varsity matches.

Delta, ranked 13th in the state, improved to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, where the Eagles remain in first place.

Freshman Jackson Darby led the way with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles over senior Reid Butts.

Freshman Charlie Vannatter posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over senior Silas Carder..

Sophomore Luke Atkinson also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles over junior Aaron Buehler.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Aaron Elliott and junior Tyce Dishman won 6-1, 6-1 over seniors Palmer Jones and Noah Kelly.

At No. 2 doubles, seniors Brady Williams and Ben Miller beat sophomores Colton Nickols and Jackson West, 6-1, 6-0.

The Eagles also won the JV match, 13-4.

Highlights included a 6-2 win by Drew Durkovich in his first singles match of the year; a 6-4 victory for Jacob Williams/Reid Cardemon after trailing 1-4 in the match; and the double teams of Bryce Carmichael/Brandon Grubbs and Kaden Crist/John Atkinson each winning 6-0.

The next two matches for Delta will be against state-ranked opponents.

Delta plays 14th-ranked Fort Wayne Carroll on Wednesday evening at neutral site Norwell HS.

Then on Thursday evening, the Eagles will visit 26th-ranked Kokomo for a varsity and JV match. This will serve as the championship match for the Kokomo Invitational from last weekend.
