On the strength of two come-from-behind wins in singles, the Eagles beat a strong Western team 4-1 to win the rain-delayed Delta Invitational.
Tuesday night’s match was played at Elwood HS courts, a neutral site. The final round of the Delta Invite was rained out on Saturday afternoon.
Western brought a 15-1 record into the match with their only loss to Culver Academies. Delta entered with a 12-6 record against a stronger schedule.
Western started strong, taking the first sets at all three singles positions.
But at No. 1 singles, senior Kody Vest rallied to beat talented Western freshman Eli Mast 2-6, 6-4, (10-2).
And at No. 3 singles, freshman Luke Atkinson also recovered from a first-set loss to beat junior Charlie Gilbert, 5-7, 6-3, (10-3).
Meanwhile, Delta doubles were dominant.
At No. 1 doubles, juniors Ben Miller and Brady Williams downed Western juniors Kaleb York and Aidan Mawbey, 6-2, 6-4.
And at No. 2 doubles, junior Aaron Elliott and sophomore Tyce Dishman crushed junior Brady Thompson and sophomore Alex Aaron, 6-0, 6-1.
Western picked up its point at No. 2 singles, where junior Evan Trauring beat Delta senior Owen Cupp, 6-0, 6-1.
The Eagles finished the regular season with a 13-6 record. The team finished as champs of the Kokomo Invitational and Delta Invitational. They placed sixth in the Jeffersonville Invitational and sixth in the Fort Wayne Carroll Invitational as well as third in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.
