Sophomore Brylee Beckley avenged an earlier loss and knocked off Alexandria senior Gabby Hosier 6-0, 6-4 on Tuesday evening to help propel Delta to a 5-0 sweep of the Tigers in the opening round of the Marion Regional.
Hosier entered with a 20-1 record on the season. Beckley, who a month earlier had lost 5-7, 6-7 to Hosier, came out firing and won 6-0 in the opening set. After falling behind 1-4 in the second set, she reeled off five straight games to win 6-0, 6-4.
The was the only competitive match as the Eagles lost only eight games combined on the other four courts.
Gabby Knight improved to 18-7 and dropped just one game at No. 1 singles. Iva Witter is now 19-5 after winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Janet Wegener and Katie Manor were the first off the court with a 6-1, 6-0 win. They improved to 22-3
Kelsey Vest and Rowan Hinds gained a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles to move to 21-3, including victories in 19 of their last 20 matches.
Delta (19-3) will face Mississinewa (16-3) in the regional championship match at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner advances to face either Homestead or Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran in Saturday’s semistate at Homestead.
The Eagles will be trying to win their eighth straight regional championship (not counting the 2020 season that was wiped out due to Covid).
