Win 5 - 0

On final exam week, Delta’s girls’ tennis team passed its first test at the Marion Regional on Tuesday evening by shutting out Mississinewa 5-0.

The 12th-ranked Eagles (now 16-3) will play Lapel (21-3) for the Marion Regional championship at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner will move on to the Sweet Sixteen at the Homestead Semi-State on Saturday.

Mississinewa won the Marion Sectional for the first time in school history in girls’ tennis. The Indians also won their conference title and placed first in the Homestead Invitational this season, beating two state-ranked teams.

But Delta’s rugged schedule paid dividends as the Eagles won every position in straight sets against Mississinewa. The highlight came at No. 3 singles, where Delta freshman Tynan Dishman won 6-3, 7-5 over Mississinewa sophomore Tyra Stanley, who entered the match with a perfect 22-0 record. Dishman now is 18-4.

Sisters Ellie Snider and Emma Snider each won 6-2, 6-1 in singles over a pair of Mississinewa sisters, Haleigh Rowley and Heidi Rowley. For Emma Snider, a senior, the victory was the 70th varsity win in her standout career. She is only the eighth girl in DHS Tennis history to reach 70 or more wins.

In doubles, seniors Grace Belangee and Lexie Manor cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. They are now 19-3 for the season. Belangee has 76 career wins, which moves her into a tie for fifth all-time.

Junior Mayzie Hinkle and freshman Maggie Manor won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Delta now is one victory away from winning the Marion Regional for the fourth straight time.
