Win 5 - 0

For the third straight postseason match, the Eagles rolled to a 5-0 victory on Tuesday night, beating Alexandria in the opening round of the Marion Regional.

The teams navigated through a pre-match rain delay and another brief rain delay early in the first sets, but in the end 8th-ranked Delta simply had too much firepower for the young Alexandria opponents.

Alexandria, with no seniors on the roster, was the champion of the Madison County tournament, the Central Indiana Conference and the Anderson Sectional.

At No. 1 singles, senior Ellie Snider won 6-0, 6-0 in 45 minutes of on-court action.  She improved her season record to 21-1.

At No. 2 singles, freshman Gwendolyn Clark won 6-1, 6-1 and moved her record to 17-7.

At No. 3 singles, freshman Maggie Hunt prevailed 6-2, 6-1.  She is now 16-7 for the spring.

At No. 1 doubles, sophomores Tynan Dishman and Maggie Manor met some resistance from an athletic Alexandria duo.  Dishman and Manor won 6-2, 6-4 and are now 16-1 together this spring.  Dishman is 21-2 overall and Manor is 20-3.

At No. doubles, senior Mayzie Hinkle (19-2) and sophomore Abby Bamidele (18-1) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win.  They are 13-0 together this spring.

Delta will face rival Marion at 5 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) for the regional championship.  The Eagles are chasing their fifth straight regional title and their eighth in the past nine seasons.

Tuesday’s victory was No. 1,025 in the boys’ and girls’ tennis career of head coach Tim Cleland. He is now the all-time winningest coach in Indiana high school tennis history.
