Led by some gutsy efforts from several seniors on Senior Day, the girls’ tennis team squeezed past Indianapolis Bishop Chatard by a 4-3 score Tuesday night.
Eighth-ranked Delta finished the regular season with a 19-1 record. Bishop Chatard, ranked 30th, put up a good fight throughout the evening.
Chatard is the sixth Top 30 ranked team that Delta has beaten this season. The Eagles also own victories over current No. 10 FW Carroll, No. 11 Center Grove, No. 16 Hamilton Southeastern, No. 26 Jasper, and No. 29 West Lafayette.
Five seniors contributed to the victory over Chatard. At No. 1 singles, senior Ellie Snider won 6-0, 6-1 over Chatard senior Alysa Guffey. At No. 2 doubles, seniors Mayzie Hinkle and Ryley Bilbrey won 6-4, 6-2. And at No. 3 doubles, seniors Lily Brannon and Corinne Jones pulled out a tough three-set victory, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the team victory.
The other position victory for Delta came at No. 1 doubles, where sophomores Tynan Dishman and Maggie Manor won 6-1, 6-0.
Bishop Chatard won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Exchange student Carolina Vidal played No. 4 singles for Delta and lost a heartbreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 6-7 despite having four match points.
The JV match ended in a 5-5 tie. Delta won the top two singles positions and the top three doubles slots with Chatard winning several of the lower positions. The Eagles finished 12-2-1 at the JV level.
Liv Bradburn, junior, showed grit in an 8-7 tiebreaker win at No. 1 JV. Freshman Katie Alexander also played tough in an 8-6 win at No. 2 singles.
Sara Cardemon and Abby Bamidele teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 1 singles. Molly Hunt and Mary Groover won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Maddy Robbins and Madelyn Haley won 8-5 at No. 3.
Delta will host the sectional this week. Yorktown faces Muncie Central at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, with Delta and Burris meeting at 4:45 p.m. Thursday. The final match will be played Friday at 4:45 p.m., with a rain date of Saturday at 11 a.m.
