Led by an outstanding performance from senior Ellie Snider, the Eagles shut out Muncie Burris, 5-0, on Tuesday evening at the DHS courts.
Snider, a senior, gained a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Burris junior Izzy Behrman at No. 1 singles in a matchup of two of East Central Indiana’s top players. Both girls have competed in the IHSAA State Singles Finals and have been named All-State Singles.
Behrman, who reached the Final Four of the State Singles last season, beat Snider twice last season. She was unbeaten this year prior to Tuesday.
Snider, who recently committed to Indiana Wesleyan University, is now 5-0 this spring.
Two freshmen, Gwendolyn Clark and Maggie Hunt, won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the Eagles. They beat Burris twin sisters Megan and Catherine Draghiciu, juniors.
Gwendolyn beat Megan 6-2, 6-3, and Maggie topped Catherine 6-4, 6-2.
Delta won both doubles matches 6-0, 6-0. Senior Mayzie Hinkle and sophomore Maggie Manor cruised at No. 1 doubles, and sophomores Tynan Dishman and Abby Bamidele won easily at No. 2 doubles.
The Eagles beat Burris in JV action, 10-0.
Winners in JV singles were Carolina Vidal, Liv Bradburn, Madelyn Haley, Lily Brannon, Corinne Jones and Olivia Miller.
Winners in JV doubles were Sara Cardemon/Ryley Bilbrey, Maddy Robbins/Mary Groover, Madalin Davis/Carly Ratliff, and Jacy Bradley/Laura Fowler.
Highlights of the match will be included on the State Champs High School Sports Show at 9 a.m. EST on Sunday on Fox Sports Midwest. The Delta tennis program is featured on the program, which will be broadcast several times throughout next week.
Delta, ranked 16th, is now 5-0 this spring. The Eagles will play a key conference match at Mt. Vernon on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
On Thursday, the Eagles will host Alexandria in a Teacher Appreciation Day match.
