In a makeup of a match rained out in late April, the Delta boys’ tennis team shut out Shelbyville 5-0 on Thursday evening. The match was played at Greenfield-Central courts.
With the victory. 17th-ranked Delta improves to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Eagles clinched at least a share of another HHC title because all other league schools have at least one loss. Delta’s only remaining HHC contest will be at Mt. Vernon on Monday.
Against Shelbyville, senior Tannon Dishman led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Senior Ben Bamidele and sophomore Tanner Southerland also won easily in singles.
In doubles, the Eagles had some new partnerships as one regular player missed the match with illness. Sophomores Brandon Jackson and Michael Curtis played No. 1 doubles and won 6-0, 6-2. Juniors Mason Knight and Daniel Vencel teamed together for the first time and won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. It was Vencel’s first varsity win and came against a Shelbyville doubles squad that had lost only twice all season.
The Eagles will host the Delta Invitational on Saturday. Eight teams are in the tournament, including 29th-ranked Richmond, which is unbeaten for the season. Delta will play Lake Central at 8:45 a.m. Saturday in the opening round.
The JV team will compete in the Fort Wayne Carroll Invitational on Saturday against Homestead and Carroll.
