For the second time in the last decade, Delta and Terre Haute South met on the tennis courts for a makeup match after rainouts created an opening. And once again, it was a great match.
Eighth-ranked TH South (15-1) edged 19th-ranked Delta by a 3-2 score at Plainfield HS courts on Thursday evening, Sept. 13.
In 2010, a highly ranked TH South team nipped Delta 3-2 at Brownsburg HS in a match that can down to a third-set at No. 3 singles.
This time the match came down to a third set at No. 2 singles.
Delta swept both doubles matches. First off the court was Joel Ashman and Brandon Jackson with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Michael Curtis and Mason Knight then completed a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
TH South got on the board at No. 3 singles, where Matthew Roberts beat Tanner Southerland 6-2, 6-3
At No. 1 singles, Tannon Dishman pushed returning All-State Singles opponent Canaan Sellers before losing, 7-6 (7), 6-3. Sellers finished in the final four at State Singles last fall.
Finally, at No. 2 singles, seniors Ben Bamidele and Aaron Gentry split sets, with Gentry taking the opening set 6-3 and then Bamidele winning the second set 6-4. The final set was tied at 2-2 before Gentry pushed through for a 6-2 clinching win.
TH South won the JV match 7-3, handing the Eagles their first loss of the season.
Highlights for Delta JV included three comeback wins: Riley Windsor at No. 3 singles, Devin McKinley at No. 4 singles, and Ben Slavin and Walker Boyle at No. 2 doubles.
