Delta High School Tennis

VS

Yorktown (SMASH CANCER 14.0)

Thursday, May 7th at 5:00 p.m. (ceremony starts)

Win 5 - 0

Delta and Yorktown combined to raise at least $23,000 for local cancer beneficiaries in the annual SmashCancer tennis match on a cool Thursday evening at the Yorktown courts.

The exact final total won’t be available for a few days, but the amount easily will exceed $20,000 for the third straight year.  In the 14-year history of the event, the teams now have raised over $160,000.

This event started modestly in 2012 but has grown into the largest single-game charity event in Indiana high school sports.

On the court, Delta gained a 5-0 victory at the varsity level and a 12-3 victory at the JV level.

Yorktown put up a strong fight in portions of the No. 1 singles match and both doubles spots.

Delta took a 2-0 lead with quick victories from Olivia Marshall at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Stella Sieber at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-1).  Marshall is 13-2 and Sieber is 12-3 for the spring.

At No. 1 doubles, Kate Manor and Alexa Bratton improved to 14-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hannah Clark and Emma Wolfert.

At No. 2 doubles, Rowan Hinds and Elizabeth Bamidele moved to 15-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Julia McCammon and Georgia Shrieve.

The longest match of the night was at No. 1 singles where two freshmen collided.  Delta’s Sophie Crabtree dropped the first set 4-6 to Yorktown’s Lauren Delk, but then settled down to win 6-2, 6-1 in the final two sets.  Crabtree is now 11-4 in her rookie season.

Delta, ranked 18th, improved to 11-1 for the season.  The Eagles will play 24th-ranked Homestead at 5 p.m. Friday at Taylor University courts.

In the JV match, Delta topped Yorktown 12-3 as every girl for both teams was able to play.

Paige Hayes, Maddi Cox and Bria Engle swept the singles matches.

Avery Gray/Mia Elliott won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles.  Audrey and Addy Anderson won 8-3 at No. 2.  The Eagles won the first nine doubles matches before the Tigers claimed the final three spots.

Thursday’s match drew a large crowd not just for the tennis but for the pre-match ceremony that honored and supported cancer patients in our community.  More than 70 Server Survivors were registered to hit honorary first serves prior to the match, although several were unable to attend on Thursday after the match was postponed two days by rain from the original date.

Each Server Survivor was introduced and went through a tunnel of encouragement from the Delta and Yorktown players.

Money was raised in a variety of ways.

A record total of 140 sponsor signs raised approximately $12,000.

A raffle generated another $6,000.

Donations made on the www.smashcancer.org website resulted in another $3,500.

Concessions and apparel sales at the match combined for approximately $1,400.

And apparel sales online are likely to generate another $2,000.  The online shop remains open through the end of the weekend at www.smashcancer.org.

That adds up to about $25,000, but there are a few expenses to be paid.  Therefore, the final total should be around $23,000 for the beneficiaries.  This year there are nine families as beneficiaries in addition to the Cancer Center at IU Health Ball and Little Red Door Cancer Services of East Central Indiana.
