Playing one of its best matches of the season, the Eagles eliminated Yorktown 5-0 in the opening round of the Delta Sectional on Thursday.
The 86-degree steamy evening took its toll. Yorktown senior standout Sasha Academia suffered cramps late in the second set and throughout the third set of her No. 1 singles match against Delta junior Gwen Clark.
Clark survived the 2-hour, 30-minute match by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The other matches were much easier as the Tigers collected only one game total in the four remaining positions.
First off the court was No. 2 doubles, where Janet Wegener and Sara Cardemon won 6-0, 6-0. They improved to 17-3.
No. 1 doubles players Maggie Manor and Tynan Dishman won 6-0, 6-0 and are now 20-2. Dishman moved into 20th place on Delta’s all-time wins list with 63 career wins despite missing the junior season due to Covid.
Clinching the team victory was Abby Bamidele, who won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for the third point. She is now 16-6.
Freshman Gabby Knight improved to 9-3 with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Junior Maggie Hunt sat out the match to rest her sore right arm
Delta (17-3) will face Burris at 4:45 p.m. Friday for the sectional title. The Eagles have won 27 of the last 28 sectional championships, losing only in 2010. They also have won fie straight regional titles.
