An unexpected sickness forced Delta to play with three freshmen in its varsity lineup, but the Eagles still won the battle of unbeatens for first place in the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings.
Delta (8-2 overall and 4-0 in the HHC) controlled New Palestine 4-1 to give the Dragons their first league loss of the year.
The Eagles did it without No. 2 singles player Brylee Beckley, who was sick. Freshman Elizabeth Bamidele stepped into the varsity lineup and won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Freshmen Katie Manor and Rowan Hinds also were winners in doubles.
Junior Gabby Knight won at No. 1 singles over New Pal senior Olivia Hasenkamp, 6-3, 6-1.
Senior Janet Wegener teamed with Manor for a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Kelsey Vest teamed with Hinds to win 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Senior Iva Witter, who normally plays No. 3 singles, moved up to No. 2 singles and battled long into the night before falling 5-7, 6-4, 3-6.
New Pal won the JV match 8-6 although the Eagles won four of the top six positions.
Delta now controls its own destiny in the league as it pursues its HHC record 13th straight conference championship. The Eagles’ remaining league opponents are Yorktown, Pendleton Heights and Shelbyville.
