The Eagles earned a solid grade of “A” on Teacher Appreciation Day with a 6-1 varsity victory over Alexandria.
Prior to the match, the team honored about 30 teachers who were chosen by players and managers as a special influence in their life. Each teacher received a gift from the team member. Earlier in the day, all faculty and staff at Delta HS and Delta MS received a catered meal courtesy of Puerto Vallarta.
On a sunny, hot April evening, Alexandria entered the match with an 8-0 record, including a seventh straight Madison County title. But the 16th-ranked Eagles tamed the Tigers, especially at the top of the lineup.
Alexandria earned only 7 games in the top three singles positions and top two doubles slots. Brylee Beckley won 6-0, 6-0. Elizabeth Bamidele, Olivia Marshall and the team of Kelsey Vest/Kate Manor dropped just one game apiece. Alexa Bratton and Rowan Hinds won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Alexandria gained a point at No. 4 varsity singles, where Tru Swoboda battled with long rallies before falling just short, 6-7 (5), 6-2, (9-11).
Also playing a varsity match at No. 3 doubles were Stella Sieber and Addy Anderson. They won 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
The JV match ended in an 8-8 tie as all Eagles got to play. Maddi Cox won 6-3 at the No. 1 singles slot, and Avery Gray rallied from an 0-4 hole to win 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Anna Marcum and Marley Dowling gained a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.
