Loss 0 - 5

Defending state champion Carmel, the state’s No. 1 ranked team, proved to have too much firepower for 19th-ranked Delta in the season opener for both teams.

Carmel won 5-0 in the match, which was played in 30 mph winds on Thursday evening at Carmel’s Todd Witsken Tennis Center.

The most competitive match was at No. 1 doubles.  Senior Maggie Hunt, playing doubles for the first time after being in varsity singles in previous seasons, teamed with junior Janet Wegener. They lost 5-7, 1-6.

At No. 1 singles, senior Gwen Clark fell 0-6, 1-6 to Carmel senior Lauren Littell, who was playing her first high school tennis match since winning the State Doubles championship in 2019.  The 2020 season was canceled by Covid, and Littell focused on tournament tennis in 2021 and did not play high school tennis.

In the JV match, Carmel won 8-1.  Cailtyn Kirby and Hailey Conner picked up the lone win for DHS in a tiebreaker. Three Eagle teams dropped 4-8 decisions.

Delta (0-1) will host the Eagle Round Robin on Saturday. Everyone in the field is state-ranked:

No. 14 Westfield
No. 15 West Lafayette
No. 19 Delta
No. 27 Oldenburg Academy
