Delta’s overall team depth proved to be the difference as the Eagles won the Delta Invitational on Saturday. The Eagles defeated Lake Central 3-2 in the championship match.
Lake Central, located just south of Chicago, is one of the largest schools in the state with 3,300 students.
Tanner Southerland turned back a challenge from standout freshman Mat Wlodarczyk at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Tanner finished 3-0 on the day and improved his season record to 16-5.
The Eagles then dominated doubles.
Brandon Jackson and Dalton Royal won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Brandon is 19-2, including 10-1 with junior Walker Boyle (who has been on quarantine) and 9-1 with freshman Dalton Royal.
Brandon now has 70 career victories and is the 14th player in school history to reach that milestone in boys’ tennis. He passed Alec Robillard (69) over the weekend.
Jordan Ashton and Riley Windsor played an excellent match and cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory for the clinching point.
Adam Altobella won his opening set 6-0 at No. 3 singles before running low on energy in the final match of the day. His opponent rallied for a third-set tiebreaker win.
In between varsity matches, several JV sets were played. In JV action, Cooper Roach went 4-0 on the day, Preston Shanayda went 3-1, Caleb Hewitt went 2-2, and Isaac Anderson went 2-2.
