Win 4 - 1

The varsity Eagles won the Delta Invitational on Saturday, with victories over Lake Central (5-0), Western (4-1) and Yorktown (3-2)

Delta (13-8) has won 10 of its last 12 matches over the past three weeks.

On Saturday, the Eagles captured 12 out of 15 matches on the day.  All three of the matches they lost were in third-set tiebreakers, and two of those came at No. 2 doubles, where varsity doubles regular Preston Shanayda was out sick.

Highlights from Saturday:

> No. 1 singles player Dalton Royal went 3-0 on the day, winning his matches by a combined score of 36-5 in games.  He has won eight of his last nine matches at the top spot.

> No. 2 singles player Owen Vest duplicated that feat, going 3-0 and 36-5 on the day.  He has won nine of his last 11 matches.

> No. 3 singles player Kody Vest won his first five sets by a combined score of 30-8 before stumbling in the last set of the day and then dropping a third-set tiebreaker.  He continues to add good offense to his game and make steady improvement.

> No. 1 doubles players Riley Bratton and Colin McCrady went 3-0 on the day and are 10-2 together this fall.  They beat Yorktown’s Ethan Darby and Rafa Sabijon on Saturday for the second time this season.  Bratton and McCrady are the only players to beat Darby and Sabijon this fall.  Bratton is a team-best 15-6 and has won 12 of his last 13 matches at the top doubles spot

> No. 2 doubles player Isaac Anderson returned to action after missing two matches with a leg injury.  The plan was to ease him back in with one or two matches, not all three, but with Shanayda out sick, Anderson was pressed into extra duty.  In the opening round against Lake Central, he and Jake Bilby won easily, extending Anderson’s winning streak to nine straight matches.  But in the final two rounds, they came up just a bit short, losing both matches in third-set tiebreakers by 8-10 scores each time.

> Doubles players Will Kile and Kam Swoboda went 2-2 in four JV matches. Kile is 12-5 this season and Swoboda is 14-5.

The Eagles now will play at Mt. Vernon at 5:45 p.m. Monday in the final regular-season match.  This will be a winner-takes-all match as both teams are 5-1 and share first place in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.  Mt. Vernon currently possesses the HHC traveling trophy, so this is a chance for the Eagles to get it back after losing it earlier this season.

Also Monday, the postseason tournament draws will be conducted by the IHSAA at 7 p.m.  Delta will host the sectional on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday with Yorktown, Muncie Central and Muncie Burris also in the field.  The Eagles will seek their 30th consecutive sectional championship.
