Twenty-eight!

The 28th-ranked Delta Eagles boys’ tennis team won its 28th straight sectional championship on Saturday.

The Eagles beat Muncie Burris 4-1 on our home courts to move to 19-5 overall. Delta will face Marion at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the opening round of the Marion Regional.

Delta has won every sectional championship from 1993 through 2020.  In 23 of the last 27 seasons, the Eagles also have won the regional championship.

Delta dominated doubles on Saturday.

Senior Brandon Jackson and junior Walker Boyle cruised 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.  Jackson is 22-2, including 13-1 with Boyle and 9-1 with freshman Dalton Royal.  Boyle missed the middle part of the season in quarantine.

The victory was No. 73 of Jackson’s career, which moves him past his uncle, Daniel Jackson, a doubles standout from 1998 to 2001.

At No. 2 doubles, Royal teamed with senior Jordan Ashton for a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Senior Josef Zacek won in straight sets at No. 2 singles over Adam Combs, 6-4, 6-2.  Zacek is 12-10 this fall.

At No. 3 singles, junior Adam Altobella won 6-1, 7-6 (4) over Jack Eads.  Altobella raised his record to 17-6.

Senior Tanner Southerland fell to Burris sophomore Charlie Behrman, 6-1, 6-4. Southerland is 18-6.
