Utilizing a new lineup, the Eagles downed Shelbyville 4-1 on Saturday morning at Mt. Vernon courts to stay atop the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings.
Delta (2-3 overall and 2-0 in the HHC) played without junior Preston Shanayda, who has been sick. Shanayda nornally plays No. 2 varsity doubles.
Doubles player Dalton Royal switched to No. 1 singles and won 6-3, 6-0 over Shelbyville’s Aidan Asher. Owen Vest played No. 2 singles and won 7-6, 6-0. Kody Vest completed the singles sweep with a straight sets win at No. 3 singles.
Colin McCrady, who normally plays No. 2 singles, moved to No. 1 doubles and partnered with Riley Bratton. They won 6-4, 6-3 over an athletic but young Shelbyville duo.
Shelbyville claimed its point at No. 2 doubles in a third-set super tiebreak. Junior Jake Bilby replaced Shanayda in the varsity lineup and teamed with Isaac Anderson. They won the opening set and had match points in the second set and in the super tiebreak but were not able to convert for the victory.
Shelbyville, which won only three matches a year ago, already has three victories this season (including a 4-1 win over Yorktown) and is a much improved team. They managed to claim only eight total games in last year’s loss to Delta but collected 31 games this season.
Delta won the JV match 5-1 as Simon Marlow, Caleb Hewitt, Owen Cupp, Ben Miller and the team of Brady Williams/Aaron Elliott were winners.
