For the 21st time in Delta’s 25 years as a member of the Hoosier Heritage Conference, the Eagles have won the league championship.
Delta clinched the title with a 3-2 victory at Mt. Vernon on Monday night. Both teams entered the match with 6-0 HHC records, and in fact Mt. Vernon was 18-0 for the entire season.
Tanner Southerland won at No. 1 singles, winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
The Eagles swept doubles. Brandon Jackson-Walker Boyle came through in strong fashion at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-3, 6-2. In the key match at No. 2 doubles, Jordan Ashton and Riley Windsor won 6-4, 6-4, beating a team that previously was 20-1 for the season.
Mt. Vernon won both No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles, each in three sets.
At No. 2 singles, Chris Hays improved to 21-1 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Josef Zacek.
At No. 3 singles, Joe Bowsher raised his record to 20-2 with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory over Adam Altobella.
Delta has won the HHC boys’ tennis title in every year since joining the league in 1996 except for 1997 (Rushville), 2008 (New Palestine), 2009 (New Pal) and 2017 (New Pal). The Eagles have won 10 of the last 11 league titles.
At the JV level, the Eagles came up big with a 13-2 victory over Mt. Vernon.
The JV team finished the season with a 17-4 record.
The varsity takes a 17-5 record into this week’s Delta Sectional.
