The final Hoosier Heritage Conference boys’ tennis match in Delta history ended Monday evening just like most of the others over the past three decades.

The Eagles delivered a dominant performance, sweeping Mt. Vernon 5-0 and yielding only eight games total,

The tenure of Delta boys’ tennis in the HHC ends with some ridiculous stats:

25 league championships in 31 years.

206 victories and only 9 losses in that span, a winning percentage of 96% since Delta joined the league in 1996 after previously playing in the White River Athletic Conference.

The Eagles compiled a perfect record this season of 5-0 in the league and 27-0 in varsity singles and doubles matches against New Palestine, Mt. Vernon, Greenfield, Pendleton Heights and Yorktown.  This is the first time since 2018 that the Eagles have not lost an individual match in league play.

Delta, ranked sixth in Indiana, ends the regular season with a 17-2 record.  The Eagles next season will play in the Eastern Crossroads Conference, a league that includes New Castle, Lapel, Shenandoah, Centerville, Northeastern and Eastern Hancock.  This league will use a flighted conference tournament to determine a champion instead of round robin dual matches.

But before the other members of the HHC rejoice that Delta is exiting the league, they might want to look both ways on the train tracks.  Joining the HHC next year will be 8th-ranked Brebeuf, 12th-ranked Guerin Catholic and Lebanon.

Entering Monday night’s match, Mt. Vernon still had a mathematical chance to win the league title.  The Marauders were 3-1 in the HHC while Delta was 4-0 and 22nd-ranked New Palestine was 4-1.  A victory for Mt. Vernon would have created a three-way logjam at the top of the standings.

But Delta quickly ended any thoughts of an upset.

Charlie Vannatter and Luke Atkinson each won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and No.3 singles. Jackson Darby added a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles.

Mt. Vernon’s best position all season has been No. 1 doubles. Tyce Dishman and Brandon Grubbs took on that challenge head-on and gained a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

At No. 2 doubles, Easton Duckworth and Roman Ashcraft finished the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Next up for the varsity is the Delta Sectional, which starts Wednesday. Delta will face Yorktown in the opening match at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.  The Eagles will be seeking their 34th straight sectional title.

The JV team won 11-3 over Mt. Vernon as everyone again got to play.

Sophomore Cooper Coutinho won 6-2 at No. 1 singles and finished his season with a 23-2 record, including 21 straight wins since his last loss on Aug. 22 in Jeffersonville.

Senior Denys Krushenytskyi also surpassed 20 wins with a 21-4 record after a 6-0 singles victory against Mt. Vernon.

In one of the craziest stats of the season, all 31 Delta players got to play at least 15 matches this fall.  That is the first time in Delta history that every player competed in 15 or more matches.

Following Monday night’s match, the team played its annual One Point Singles Tournament.  The winner was senior Tyce Dishman, who beat Charlie Vannatter in the final one-point match.  Also reaching the semifinals were Luke Atkinson and Evan Lindburgh.
