Taking a nearly two-hour road trip on a Monday to play against a state-ranked team sounds like a recipe for disaster in high school sports.
But Delta girls’ tennis turned that recipe into a savory meal with a hard-fought 4-1 victory to conclude the regular season.
The Eagles, ranked a season-best 16th in this week’s final regular-season poll, flexed their strong depth to gain the victory over 23rd-ranked Franklin Community, a state finalist team last spring.
This match was recently scheduled as each team had a match opening due to earlier rainouts.
Senior Brylee Beckley led the way with a come-from-behind 5-7, 7-5, (10-2) victory at No. 2 singles over Madison Luse. Brylee finished the regular season with a 17-4 record.
Brylee won 14 varsity matches as a freshman, 16 as a sophomore, and 17 as a junior. She is on track for a possible 20-win season this year.
Junior Olivia Marshall overcame a slow start at No. 3 singles to win 6-4, 6-0 over Melanie Flora. Marshall is 16-2 in her first season of varsity action.
The Eagles swept doubles as they often have done this season.
Kelsey Vest and Kate Manor won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 position, while Rowan Hinds and Alexa Bratton won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. Each doubles team has just three losses for the season.
Franklin gained its point at No. 1 singles, where junior Marnie Moore outrallied Delta junior Elizabeth Bamidele 6-0, 6-0. Bamidele is 12-8 in her first season at the top spot.
In JV action, the Eagles gained a 2-1 victory. Stella Sieber and Tru Swoboda each won singles matches. Sieber won 8-1 to improve to 11-1 JV and 6-0 varsity. Swoboda won 6-1 and is now 17-3 at JV singles.
Anna Marcum and Addy Anderson played the night’s longest match, eventually falling 6-7, 7-5, (3-10).
Delta will take a 17-2 record and an 10-match winning streak into the postseason. The Eagles will play Yorktown in the opening round of the Delta Sectional at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. The other semifinal also will be played Wednesday between Muncie Burris and Muncie Central. The finals are planned for 4:45 p.m. Thursday.
