The Eagles completed a dominating performance in the Delta Sectional by blanking Muncie Burris 5-0 on Friday evening.
Delta claimed its 10th straight sectional championship in girls’ tennis and its 28th in the past 29 seasons.
Burris managed to win only five games total in the five matches.
Four of those came at No. 1 singles. Delta’s Gwen Clark won 6-1, 6-3 over Paige Powers. In the regular season, Clark had won 7-5, 7-6 over Powers, but this time she controlled the match from start to finish.
In all the other positions, the Owls scored only one game.
In the two 5-0 sectional victories over Yorktown and Burris, the final totals were overwhelming:
> Delta won 14 of the 20 sets by 6-0 score
> Four of the remaining six sets were 6-1 for the Eagles
> Altogether, Delta won 122 games and lost only 16
First off the court in the championship match was the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Maggie Manor and Tynan Dishman. They won 6-0, 6-0 and are 21-2 for the spring.
Junior Maggie Hunt was sharp, also, with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in under an hour at No. 3 singles. She collected her 18th victory of the season.
Senior Abby Bamidele gained her 17th victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Janet Wegener and senior Sara Cardemon won 6-0, 6-0 and increased their season record to 18-3.
Twelfth-ranked Delta (18-3) will aim for its sixth consecutive regional championship next week. The Eagles face a strong Alexandria team (16-2) at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Marion Regional. The other semifinal pairs Marion vs Jay County. The winners play at 5 p.m. Wednesday for the title.
