On Friday, the number 13 proved to be lucky for the girls’ tennis team.
The Eagles won their 13th straight sectional championship in a 5-0 shutout victory over Muncie Burris in the finals of the Delta Sectional. And they limited the Owls to just 13 total games in the match.
Delta (17-4) won every set by a 6-2, 6-1 or 6-0 score.
This was the Eagles’ 31st sectional title in the past 32 seasons. The championship was the 60th sectional title in the 63 seasons that Coach Cleland has been at the helm of Delta girls’ and boys’ tennis.
First off the court was No. 3 singles player Elizabeth Bamidele, who won 6-0, 6-0. A sophomore, Bamidele did not drop a game in either sectional match and is now 15-8 for the season.
Senior Gabby Knight improved to 18-6 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles over Kennedy Horner for the Owls.
Junior Brylee Beckley defeated Caitlin Carter 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and is now 16-4 for the spring.
Junior Kelsey Vest and sophomore Katie Manor were motivated by a close regular season match against Burris and came out determined at No. 1 doubles. They had beaten Joey Burton and Grace Murray 7-5, 6-1 in the regular season, but this time Vest and Manor steamrolled their way to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. They improved to 21-3 for the season.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Rowan Hinds and freshman Alexa Bratton are 19-5 after a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
