For the first time since 2000, the Eagles won a match in the Team State Finals.
Delta edged Oldenburg Academy 3-2 in the quarterfinals at Center Grove HS courts.
The key court was No. 1 doubles, where two All-State level teams went head to head. Maggie Hunt and Janet Wegener gained a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mimi Wilder and Evelyn Storms.
Gwendolyn Clark at No. 1 singles and Brylee Beckley at No. 3 singles added convincing victories. Gwen won 6-0, 6-0, and Brylee won 6-2, 6-1.
Oldenburg’s Alyssa Wanstrath, the daughter of former Delta Tennis player Natalie Westerfeld, won at No. 2 singles in a long battle with Gabby Knight. Alyssa won the opening set 6-4, then Gabby won 6-1 in the second set. The rallies were long throughout the match. Since the team match was decided by that time, the officials decided to play a super tiebreaker, which Alyssa won 10-2.
At No. 2 doubles, Madelyn Haley and Iva Witter fell 4-6, 3-6 to a strong Oldenburg squad.
With the win, the Eagles advanced to the Final Four. The matchups for Saturday are #1 Carmel vs. #5 South Bend St. Joseph and #20 Delta vs. #4 Fishers.
The last time the Eagles reached the Final Four was 2000. That’s when they beat South Bend St. Joseph 4-1 in the third-place match after falling to eventual champion Park Tudor in the semifinal round.
