The top two teams in District 4 — Delta and Mt. Vernon — met Wednesday evening in a crucial Hoosier Heritage Conference match, and Delta came away with a 4-1 road victory.
Both teams feature young varsity rosters. Delta played two seniors, one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen. Mt. Vernon played four juniors and three sophomores.
22nd-ranked Delta (4-2) dominated at No. 2 singles, No. 3 singles, and No. 2 doubles, winning those three spots by a combined score of 36 games to 7 games. The Eagles also rallied for a three-set win at No. 1 doubles.
The victory was the 82nd consecutive HHC win over the past 12 years for Delta in girls’ tennis.
Mt. Vernon entered with a strong resume, having lost a tight 2-3 decision to 10th-ranked Center Grove.
However, sophomore Brylee Beckley cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles in her best match of the season. Senior Iva Witter steamrolled her opponent 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and was in charge from start to finish.
The Eagles juggled their doubles positions with senior Janet Wegener teaming with freshman Rowan Hinds for the first time and winning 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. It was the 50th career varsity victory for Wegener in just over two seasons of play.
Sophomore Kelsey Vest and freshman Katie Manor picked up a solid win at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-1.
Mt. Vernon collected its only point at No. 1 singles, where returning All-State player Kylie Brandes won 6-1, 6-0 over Gabby Knight.
The JV team lost 12-6 to Mt. Vernon. Three of the Eagles’ victories came in singles, as Caitlyn Kirby, Olivia Marshall and Stella Sieber gained victories. Winners in doubles were Grace Flowers/Sam Diaz, Carmen Maxwell/Audrey Anderson, and Elizabeth Davis/Madison Sanchez.
Next up for the Eagles will be a home match vs Alexandria on Thursday on Teacher Appreciation Day. The ceremony to honor teachers will start at 4 p.m. in the shelter and will feature guest speaker Kristin Crider, former valedictorian and tennis standout at Delta who is now a dentist in Muncie.
