Junior Adam Altobella led the way by being first off the courts with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles to help Delta sweep past Yorktown, 5-0. The Eagles did not lose a set in Tuesday’s home match.
Delta, ranked 28th, improved to 5-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with matches remaining against Pendleton Heights and unbeaten Mt. Vernon.
After a slow start in which they lost the first two games, Brandon Jackson and Dalton Royal regrouped and won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Jackson is 14-1 for the season while Royal is 5-0.
Next off the court was No. 1 singles senior Tanner Southerland, who won 6-4, 6-2 over Mason Minniear. Southerland improved to 11-4 for the fall.
Seniors Jordan Ashton and Riley Windsor started quickly at No. 2 doubles, winning the first set 6-0. They ran into a few bumps in the second set but prevailed 6-4.
The story was the exact opposite at No. 2 singles, as senior Josef Zacek won the opening set 6-4, then rolled to a 6-0 second-set victory.
At the JV level, the Eagles won 6-2. Jake Bilby and Caleb Hewitt won singles matches. In doubles, the teams of Riley Bratton/Aidan Landis, Preston Shanayda/Owen Vest, Logan Anderson/Isaac Anderson, and Brad Shue/Cooper Roach were winners.
Logan Anderson raised his record to 10-0. He is the lone unbeaten player on the team.
Delta’s varsity now stands 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the HHC while the JV team is 11-1. The JV team will compete on Saturday in the Peru Invitational against Peru, Logansport and Guerin Catholic. The varsity returns to action on Sept. 22 vs FW Carroll at Norwell HS courts.
