Win 5 - 0

The Eagles maintained their perfect postseason on Tuesday evening with a 5-0 sweep of Jay County in the opening round of the Marion Regional.

The team is now 15-0 in singles and doubles matches in the postseason.

The best match was at No. 1 doubles, where Jay seniors Madison Dirksen and Holly Hemmelgarn, who had only lost once this season, used their height and athleticism to make the match interesting. In the end, Delta senior Maggie Hunt and junior Janet Wegener won 6-3, 6-4 to push their record to 22-2.

Three matches were settled by 6-0, 6-0 scores and ended within a couple of minutes of each other.  Winners were Gwen Clark at No. 1 singles, Gabby Knight at No. 2 singles, and Madelyn Haley/Iva Witter at No. 2 doubles.

Brylee Beckley added a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.

Ranked 20th, Delta (17-4) will face 27th-ranked Alexandria (20-1) in the finals. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, weather-permitting.

Alexandria edged Mississinewa 3-2 in a semifinal match Tuesday. The Tigers won with their strength at the bottom part of the lineup as they won at No. 3 singles and both doubles.  Alexandria’s doubles players are all seniors and each team has a 22-2 record this spring.

On April 21, Delta beat Alexandria 5-2 in a match that featured four varsity singles spots and three varsity doubles spots. That is the only loss for the Tigers this season.

Delta is gunning for its seventh straight regional championship, not counting the 2020 Covid cancellation year (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021).

The winner will advance to the Homestead Semi-State on Saturday.
