On a beautiful Thursday evening with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s, a nice crowd enjoyed watching two strong teams compete as #1 Carmel came to Delta for a dual match.

The Greyhounds won convincingly with a 5-0 varsity victory and a 12-2 JV victory over the 18th-ranked Eagles.

But there were positives for Delta’s young and athletic team. Carmel returned five of its seven varsity players from last year’s state title team and has won four of the past five state championships.

Delta, which returned four starters from its Final Four team of a year ago, is playing with two seniors, one junior, two sophomores, and two freshmen in the lineup.  The Eagles actually won a few more games this year against the Greyhounds.  The Eagles claimed 14 games as compared to just 10 a year ago.

Top performer for Delta on Thursday was No. 1 singles player Gabby Knight, who lost 2-6, 2-6 to Carmel’s top player.

Senior Janet Wegener and freshman Katie Manor won three games in the first set against two Carmel seniors.

The JV team picked up victories from the doubles teams of Caitlyn Kirby/Emily Hayes and Grace Flowers/Carmen Maxwell.

Next up for Delta will be the Eagle Round Robin Invitational on Saturday at home.  The Eagles play 9th-ranked Westfield at 9 a.m., then 30th-ranked West Lafayette around noon and Brown County about 2:30 p.m.
