Senior Iva Witter led the way with a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles as the Eagles rolled to a 5-0 shutout victory over Shelbyville in the regular-season finale on Saturday morning at Mount Vernon courts.
Witter finishes the regular season with a fine 16-5 record in her first season of varsity singles after previously playing doubles.
Both doubles teams steamrolled their Golden Bear opponents, also. Senior Janet Wegener and freshman Katie Manor won 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 19-3 at the top spot. Sophomore Kelsey Vest and freshman Rowan Hinds won 6-1, 6-1 and are 18-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Brylee Beckley found her groove in a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. She is 12-8 for the spring.
The only varsity match to extend longer was at No. 1 singles. Junior Gabby Knight won 6-2 in both the first and third sets after encountering some adversity in a 3-6 middle set. In the end, she hung tough for her 15th victory against just seven losses at the No. 1 position.
As a team, the 20th-ranked Eagles improved to 16-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference for their 13th straight league title. By position in conference, Delta went 6-1 at No. 1 singles, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, 7-0 at No. 3 singles, 7-0 at No. 1 doubles, and 7-0 at No. 2 doubles.
In the JV match, Shelbyville gained an 8-7 victory. Winners for the Eagles were Elizabeth Bamidele, Caitlyn Kirby and Mackemzie Lipps in singles, and the doubles teams of Emily Hayes/Olivia Marshall, Anna Marcum/Marley Dowling, Ella Marcum/Maddy Cooper and Hannah Swanson/Ava McCully.
