The Eagles jumped on Shelbyville’s young tennis squad early and took control of a Hoosier Heritage Conference match, winning 5-0 over the Golden Bears on Saturday morning at the Mt. Vernon courts.
Delta won the opening sets at the five varsity positions by scores of 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2.
Shelbyville, with five sophomores and a freshman among their top seven players, battled closer in some of the second sets, but Delta closed out the shutout victory.
Senior Simon Marlow won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Junior Kody Vest prevailed 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. And junior Owen Cupp hung on 6-2, 7-6 (3) to win at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, seniors Dalton Royal and Preston Shanayda stepped up big in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Shelbyville’s Aiden Smith and Carson Schaf entered the match with a 7-0 record.
At No. 2 doubles, freshman Tyce Dishman made his varsity debut. Partnering with senior Jake Bilby, they won 6-2, 6-4.
In JV action, the Eagles claimed a 6-1 victory.
Delta (2-0) then traveled north to Culver Academies later Saturday afternoon for a second match.
