Delta High School Tennis

VS

Yorktown (sectional finals)

Friday, May 20th at 4:45 p.m.

Win 5 - 0

In the most difficult playing conditions of the season, the Eagles swept Yorktown 5-0 to claim the 2022 Delta Sectional championship.

A tricky crosswind of 25 mph — with gusts higher and swirling — gave the players fits throughout the match.  Add in temperatures in the high 80s and it was challenging to say the least.

Yorktown hung tough in the early going with several courts at 3-2 or 4-3.

In the match against Burris, freshman Brylee Beckley won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for her 10th win of the season.

Over time, Delta pulled away to gain its 11th straight sectional championship and its 29th title in the past 30 years.

Ranked 20th, Delta (16-4) will face Jay County at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Marion Regional semifinals.  Alexandria, ranked 29th, and Mississinewa will meet in the other semifinal.

Senior Gwen Clark defeated Jillian Darby 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles for her 16th win of the season.

Sophomore Gabby Knight collected her 18th win by topping Kate Lloyd 6-4, 6-0.

Freshman Brylee Beckley picked up victory number 11 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Shia Burns.

Senior Maggie Hunt and junior Janet Wegener moved to 21-2 at No. 1 doubles. They beat Izzy Tweedy and Lucy Wilhoite 6-2, 6-1.

Senior Madelyn Haley and junior Iva Witter dominated Jenna Tuck and Rylee Webb, 6-0, 6-0, in a quick match.  Madelyn and Iva moved to 17-4 at No. 2 doubles.
